James is a seasoned and accomplished investment manager with over 35 years of experience in the industry. He has the distinction of being one of Barron's Top Advisors for four consecutive years. He is frequently featured in media outlets such as CNBC, Bloomberg, CBS News, and Reuters, and he has been quoted in publications like The Wall Street Journal, Barron's, and Forbes. James is well versed as an investment manager with a particular emphasis on macroeconomic research and investment risk management. He is responsible for creating the firm's Active Risk Management processes.
James is the author of three award-winning investment and finance books, The Journey to Wealth, The Sustainable Endowment, and his latest publication, Wall Street Lessons. As a sought-after speaker, organizations often feature him for his insightful and informative presentations on a wide range of investment topics. He has spoken for several prestigious organizations like the American Association of Individual Investors (AAII), Charles Schwab, Private Markets Group, Portfolio Summits, and LinkBridge Investors.
A devoted philanthropist, James was nominated as the 2018-19 Citizen of the Year of the Town of Tiburon for his dedication to giving back to the local and global community. He is a member of the Forbes Finance Council, The CFA Institute, and the Financial Planning Association. Further, James serves on a number of non-profit boards and is a Trustee of Berkshire School and a member of their Endowment and Finance Committees. James' experience includes positions with LF Rothschild and Lehman Brothers before founding Main Street in 1993. He is a graduate of Harvard University.
When James is not pursuing his passion for investing and philanthropy, he can be found spending time with his family, participating in vintage auto rallies, traveling, and playing tennis. As a jazz fan, one of James' favorite movies is Whiplash. His current favorite read is Ray Dalio's, Principles. James spends his time between our offices in Midtown Manhattan and Sausalito, CA.
